My National Day of Prayer Invocation

05 May

Tomorrow is the National Day of Prayer and I encourage you to spend just a few minutes of your day praying to the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are to lift our voices, hearts and hands to the heavens and humble ourselves in the sight of God, confessing our great need for Him and for His grace and mercy to descend from the heavens upon us.  In the Bible, we are not just encouraged to pray, we are commanded to pray to our Father who is in heaven.

So, maybe you want to pray, but you just don’t know what to pray for, or in what words you should put it. Well, here is a National Day of Prayer Invocation that I wrote for a local business that wanted to participate tomorrow.  Feel free to use this as a guide or just pray it as it is written.

Heavenly Father,

We come before you, first, to praise Your Holy Name.  As we lift our voices in prayer to you, we know that you hear us because of your great love for us.

Lord, we confess our need for You.  Apart from Your mercy and grace, we are both helpless and hopeless, but we are encouraged and strengthened by the great truths of Your Word.  Our days have been numbered by You, before any of them had come to pass.  The very hairs on our head have been counted by You, and each individual who lives on the Earth You created has been fearfully and wonderfully made by You.

But Lord, today we acknowledge our weakness and our failings to you.  Our world is in great distress and we freely admit our guilt.  We have allowed the murder of millions of unborn children.  We have allowed racism and hatred to fester in our hearts.  We have allowed our country to be hijacked by those who would erase Your name, not only from the world we live in, but from the annals of history as well.

We have stood by and done nothing to protect Your name or our right to worship You freely.  We ask that You forgive us of this and the many other trespasses that we have committed.

We ask that you return to us, to lead us and to guide us and to protect us, just as you led the founding fathers of our once-great nation across the ocean from British oppression to America, a land flowing with milk and honey, where You could be freely worshiped.

We seek Your wisdom.  We seek Your favor.  We seek Your blessing.  We seek to restore our country to its former glory.  A glory that can only come as we restore Your presence to our cities, our congress, our judges, and our president.

So today, we lift up President Obama to you.  We pray for his health and well-being, and for Godly wisdom and leadership as he leads our country into the future.  We pray that You would guide and direct his steps in every way.

We pray for our judges, those who are set over us to provide justice and righteous impartiality.  We pray that you would write Your law upon their hearts and that the decisions they hand down to the people would be tempered with meekness and integrity.

We pray for our congress.  We ask that You would give them wisdom and knowledge as they make laws that Your people will be subject to.  Help them to pursue what is in the best interest of the people of this country, as the first congress did more than 200 years ago.

We pray for our military and the members of their families.  We pray for their safety and for a quick return to their homes and to their families.  For our fallen heroes, we pray for their families and friends, that they would be comforted.  We pray they all Americans would reach out to our soldiers and their families in gratitude and thanksgiving for the sacrifices they are making for our peace and safety.

We pray for the cities and towns and communities all across the United States.  Help us to bring unity and peace to every corner of our world.  Strengthen us to be protectors of the innocent and servants to the lowly.  Show us the truth that every person, no matter their skin color or ethnic background, is our brother and sister, and is entitled to at least the dignity and respect and love that we show to ourselves.

We now pray for our families.  We lift up our mothers, fathers and our children to you.  Endow mom and dad with a Godly love for their children and move them to teach righteousness, fairness, integrity and mercy to their offspring, not just in words, but also in deeds.  We pray that You would protect the family that You designed in creation from persecution and attack.

Finally today, we pray for ourselves, that we would reflect Your goodness and mercy in all that we think, all that we say and all that we do.  We pray that you will enable us to humble ourselves as we pray and seek Your face.  We pray that we would be motivated to turn from our wicked ways, so that Your promise in 2 Chronicles might be fulfilled.  Please Lord, hear us from heaven, forgive our sin and heal our land.

This we pray in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

God listens to every single voice that is raised to Him with a sincere heart.
