This is one of the most beautiful passages in the entire Bible. All of the Gospel is summed up here. God does indeed love the world. He loves every person in His creation. After all, He created each one of us with unique features, such as fingerprints and personality. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anyone else exactly like you. God took great care in creating each one of us, and because of that, we are all important to Him.
But God hates sin. His holiness prevents Him from even looking upon sin, which means that we, as sinful creatures, cannot fellowship with God because our sin separates us from Him. Now, we like to look back and blame Adam and Eve for our sin, but the truth is that Adam and Eve only did what we would have done, had we been there!
And now we are already condemned, from the moment we are born, to an eternity in hell, forever apart from God. Thank God that He did not send Jesus to judge, but to save! Our response, however, shows our true sinful nature. Instead of running towards the light, we chose to flee into the darkness.
That’s why God Himself had to leave heaven in the Person of Jesus Christ, be born in a manger as a man, live a perfect life, die a gruesome and horrible death, and be raised from the dead to break the power of sin and death. That’s the message of the Gospel.
Look at verse 21:
21 – But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.
Whoever does what is true, his works have been carried out in God. Apart from God, we can do nothing to please God!
Ephesians 2: 8,9 – For it is by grace you have been saved through faith and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not of works so that no one may boast.
We have to understand that it is not of ourselves. To think otherwise is to rob God of His glory. To think that we could muster up enough faith to truly believe on our own, without the regeneration of the Holy Spirit, is to say that we can do something to save ourselves.
The Bible is clear, from beginning to end: we do not seek God. Like Adam in the garden, we run and hide from God every time. But thank God that He doesn’t just leave us in our sin, but He sent Jesus to seek and to save the lost. He is the Shepherd of His sheep, and His sheep know His voice. All we like sheep have gone astray, each to our own way, but God has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Praise be to God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit for the Gospel!!!
