Salesmen make their living from being able to talk people into buying things they don’t need or even want. They know what to say, what not to say, when to push and when to close the sale.
And isn’t that exactly what we think of when we someone mentions that ten letter dirty word: evangelism? We picture some crazy person standing on a stepstool in the middle of Times Square screaming that the end of the world is near, or else a salesman backing you into a corner, wanting you to “try Jesus.”
But here in this passage, we see one of the most pure and perfect examples of true evangelism in all of history.
Once Jesus called Philip, Philip wasted no time in finding Nathanael and telling him that “we have found Him of whom Moses in the law and the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Now the exchange between Philip and Nathanael is very interesting because it contains what we all fear: a question.
“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?”
Now to us, it doesn’t matter what the question is. We all fear the question, because we fear the unknown.
- What if they ask me something I can’t answer?
- What if they ask me something personal about my relationship with Jesus?
- What if they ask me about my sin?
- What if they ask me why I believe what I believe?
Would we answer these questions?
Would we even be able to?
Or would we simply NOT share the Gospel and avoid these types of questions altogether?
Philip had the right answer. Philip knew that there was nothing that HE could say in his own power that would make a difference.
Instead, he simply led Nathanael to Jesus. “Come and see!”
What effective witnesses we would be if only we would simply lead people to Jesus. We don’t have to be able to answer all of the questions. We don’t need to be great salesmen. We only need to be able to point people to Jesus!
Jesus will do the rest!
Jesus knows what’s in the person’s heart. (Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”)
Jesus knows how to reveal himself to the person. (Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”)
The Holy Spirit brings salvation and opens spiritual eyes. (Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”)
Jesus does everything Himself! All we need to do is what Philip did: point the way to Jesus.
But, what if we don’t know how?
If you would like to learn how to share your faith with confidence, Sonshine Fellowship Church will begin its Fall Evangelism Explosion class on Sunday, September 13th at 10am. It is our heart and purpose of ministry to equip everyone to be able to share the Gospel with anyone, anywhere. Make it a priority to fulfill the Great Commission.
He gave His life for you… Won’t you share Him with the world???
