The true Light…

Why does John make the distinction “true” when talking about the Light? It’s because there is a false light – satan. He desires worship, but worship is for God alone. So what does satan do? He lies, he deceives, he imitates. Jesus is the True Light, but 2 Corinthians 11:14
tells us that “even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” God originally created a world that was perfect and devoid of sin. But sin already existed in the heart of satan who, in the form of a serpent, deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit herself and also giving it to her husband Adam. Thus, sin entered into our world. Now, satan tries to deceive us, using our culture, our flesh, our friends, our family, our emotions, our church, other Christians, and even twisting the very Word of God itself. Satan wants to keep us from seeing the truth at all costs.

Verse 9 has a very sobering implication: “The True Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.” On the day of judgment, no one will be able to stand before Jesus Christ and say they didn’t know the truth. Not only do we have the light of creation to point us to a Creator, but we have the True Light, Jesus, who came into this world which was made through Him, and the world did not even know him. He came out of heaven into this sinful world. He came to seek and to save the lost, because the Bible tells us that there is no one who seeks after God and that we have all turned aside, each to our own way. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. What sorrow Jesus must have felt on this earth!

“But to those who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become the children of God, who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” It is not enough that we think we know God. Satan knows God and is going to spend eternity in hell. The true question is this: Does God know me? Have I been born of God? Has my name been written in the Book of Life?

Revelation 20: 11-15 says:

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them.

12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.

13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Having my name in the Book of Life is the only record of my name that matters. Could it really be so simple as having child-like faith? Could it really be by grace alone through faith? I know my works… Praise Jesus, where I will spend eternity is not based on what I have done, but on what HE has done!
